Draft Or No Draft

Our new Defense Secretary says he would consider more troops for Afghanistan. Add to that they additional 20 or so thousand more troops that is wanted for the Iraq buildup and one question definately comes to mind.

Is it time to bring back the draft?

Do we really want to rely on the Reserve and National Guard to bolster our forces? True we want to cut down on the stresses we are putting on our active forces with tour after tour after tour in Iraq and sometimes for longer than 12 months at a time but are we stretching ourself too thin militarily?

Hey Scott, it's the other Scott. Since we're both 42, named Scott Barker and we both blog(and I think the similarites stop there) I thought we should introduce ourselves.

Email me so I can respond (I don't see an email address for you on your blog. I'm at scottstake@yahoo.com.

We're probably distantly related, as my branch of the Barker family started in PA, went to WV then to Oh, where I grew up.

Regards.

Oh, and I think the idea of a draft is a non-starter but do think the reason Bush never really sent more troops to Iraq is that we don't have them. The troops he is sending there now doesn't exceed the total number we had there last year and is below the number many folks were saying last year needed to be added.

Thanks for the comment.

I can be reached at scott@scottwbarker.com

I traced my family (father's side) back to Suffolk England about 1820's if I remember correctly. Great grandfather came over via Canada in 1870's.

I have a borther-in-law who is over there now for the third time and a sister-in-law who is going over there shortly for her second time so I may be biased.

I think though rather than stretching ourselves so thin and relying on reserve and/or guard troops to make up the difference we should reinstate the draft. That's a big IF though since I like majority have lost the taste for this conflict however a bold and nobel endeavor it was.

When I speak "bold and nobel" I am speaking in general terms of freedom and democracy and not the weapons of mass destruction that were never found as the reason for starting this conflict.

How about someone come up with a plan to finish the mission and stop the nonsense!
Or how about the media stop reporting the negative and show the positive that has happened the past 3 years.
