Simply put
He's adopted!!
Scientists have long understood that simply wanting to "Be like Mike" alone or perhaps being in the company of greatness does not insure that the subject in question absorbes the seemingly natural abilities and skill sets of the host family.
Certainly by just being in the company of greatness has the ability to make you better but is no substitution to the inherited natural talent that is passed along a family line.
Hope the burden is lifted Eli.
